Product FAQs

What does the Sawyer Squeeze water filter remove?

The Sawyer Squeeze removes 99.99999% of bacteria (including E. coli, salmonella, and cholera), 99.9999% of protozoa (including giardia and cryptosporidium), and 100% of microplastics. It does not remove viruses, dissolved chemicals, salt, or heavy metals. Testing was performed by Hydreion, LLC (Microbiological Report S05-03).

Do Sawyer filters remove microplastics, viruses, and heavy metals?

Sawyer filters remove 100% of microplastics and 99.9999%+ of bacteria and protozoa. They do not remove viruses, heavy metals, dissolved chemicals, or salt — a 0.1-micron filter is too coarse for viruses (0.02–0.4 μm). If you need virus removal, use the Sawyer S3 Foam filter or pair the Squeeze with a chemical treatment like chlorine dioxide.

How does a Sawyer hollow fiber membrane filter work?

Water passes through millions of microscopic U-shaped hollow fibers with pores of 0.1 microns absolute. Bacteria (0.2–10 μm) and protozoa (1–300 μm) are physically too large to pass through and stay outside the fibers; clean water exits the open ends. The fibers are robust enough to be backwashed and reused indefinitely with no replacement cartridges.

How long does a Sawyer water filter last?

A Sawyer 0.1-micron filter has no defined end-of-life — Sawyer has filters in continuous use for 20+ years that have processed hundreds of thousands of gallons. The filter is rated to 100,000 gallons and is backed by a manufacturer's lifetime limited warranty. Backwash regularly and store away from direct sunlight to keep flow rate high.

What bottles fit the Sawyer Squeeze filter?

The Sawyer Squeeze and Mini fit any plastic bottle with standard 28 mm threads — Smart Water, Dasani, Propel, Pepsi, and most disposable water bottles. They also work with the included Sawyer pouches and the CNOC Vecto 2L bladder. Finger-tighten only; over-tightening damages the gasket.

À quelle fréquence dois-je laver mon filtre à contre-courant ?

We recommend backwashing your filter before first use, when your flow rate begins to diminish, before prolonged storage, and when you are ready to start using your filter again. Backwashing your filter after storage is a great way to re-wet the fibers and restore the flow rate before use.

How often should I clean my filter?

Sawyer recommends cleaning your filter after each bucket of water, or at least once per day. This helps develop the habit of cleaning which will make your filter last 10+ years.

‍

What is the shelf life of a Sawyer Filter?

At this point we do not know what the lifetime limitations of the fibers are. We have working filters that have been in continuous use for 20+ years and have filtered hundreds of thousands of gallons of water. With proper cleaning and if stored in a cool dry place out of direct UV light, our filters should last indefinitely as Sawyer’s fibers are so robust, they can be backwashed and reused perpetually with no expensive cartridges to replace… ever.

Find Help Guides & Videos

The QR code printed on our filters brings users to our website's help page, where they can select one of the ten available languages. When in-person demonstrations and training are impossible, users are able to learn everything they need to know about their filter at the point of use.

The QR codes can also be scanned into GIS survey software for monitoring and evaluation of the filters. This replaces the bar codes that were previously used.
