The West’s unusually warm spring hasn’t helped. In California, experts measured April mosquito populations at more than double the norm. And in Utah, mosquito season started in March when a string of hot days drew overwintering species out of hibernation weeks earlier than usual. In the Southeast, which will bear the brunt of the El Niño rain, the bugs will be especially brutal.
